Introduction
This knowledge article explains a common error encountered during the merchant registration process, outlines the most likely causes, and provides guidance to help resolve the issue. It also clarifies the meaning of an Organization ID to support successful registration.
Overview
An Organization ID, formerly referred to as a Cybersource Merchant ID or MID, is a unique value within the Visa Acceptance Solutions (including Cybersource) systems that you define during account registration. Your Organization ID identifies your merchant account and payment configuration within transaction processing systems. You provide this identifier when signing in to the Business Center and use it as an identifier in transaction data traversing Visa Acceptance Solutions systems.
After receiving the Merchant Registration email, users may encounter the following error during registration:
"Organization/Merchant ID has an invalid format error"
Cause
This error can occur in any of the following situations:
- An incorrect Organization ID or Merchant ID was entered. Copy the exact Organization ID or Merchant ID exactly as listed in the Merchant Registration email.
- An incorrect contact email was entered. Use the same email address that received the Merchant Registration email, and confirm there are no leading or trailing spaces.
- The Organization ID being registered is longer than 30 characters. The system limits Organization IDs to 30 characters. Be sure to include the
_acctsuffix when counting the total length of the Merchant Account ID.
Example A: Valid
MID: cybersource_Merchant123
Merchant Account ID: cybersource_Merchant123_acct (28 characters) VALID
Example B: Invalid
MID: cybersource_testmerchant123
Merchant Account ID: cybersource_testmerchant123_acct (32 characters) INVALID
Procedure
- Verify that the Organization ID or Merchant ID entered matches the value provided in the Merchant Registration email.
- Confirm that the contact email address entered is the same email address that received the Merchant Registration email.
- Check for any leading or trailing spaces in both the ID and email fields.
- Confirm that the full Merchant Account ID, including the
_acctsuffix, does not exceed 30 characters. - Retry the registration after correcting any identified formatting issues.
Resolution
Review the causes listed above and verify that none of these conditions apply while attempting to complete the merchant registration process.
